“The Seneca Nation is greatly concerned about the impacts upon ancestral burial grounds from Invenergy’s proposed Horseshoe Solar Project. The Canawaugus Territory and surrounding areas were the home to countless generations of Seneca and other related Native nations. The territories along the Genesee River were supposedly sold by treaty in 1826, however it was never properly ratified and agreed to by either the Seneca or the United States. Historic and archeological consultants hired by the project have noted that the treaty is “arguably fraudulent” and found a human bone recently during initial surveying.”
