“Gavin Donohue, spokesman for the Independent Power Producers of New York, is not shy about sharing his opinions on energy. Recently, he suggested that natural gas be coupled with renewables to meet state climate goals. However, as a member of New York’s Climate Action Council, he should know that the state’s vaunted Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act requires that New York’s electricity be carbon-free in less than 20 years. That won’t happen with fossil fuels.
More disturbing is that state regulators also appear to be giving little thought to this important objective. Recently, giant new gas-fired power plants have come online in Orange and Dutchess counties. Their purpose: to replace Indian Point, which for decades provided downstate New York with reliable zero-emission energy.”
